Local officials have approved an enormous new mall for South Florida – it will be the biggest in the United States – that will include an indoor ski slope, a skating rink, a water park and 2,000 hotel rooms in addition to hundreds of stores and restaurants.
The $4 billion project, American Dream Miami, was approved Thursday by the Miami-Dade County Commission, following years of debate, The Associated Press reported.
The mall will be built on 175 acres of vacant land in the far western suburbs of Miami, northwest of Miami International Airport near where Interstate 75 and the Florida Turnpike converge. Some of the debate over the project over the years has been due to the fact that the project will be built not far from the environmentally sensitive Everglades.
Canadian developer Triple Five is building the mall-theme park. That’s the same company that developed Mall of America in Minnesota, which will be surpassed as North America’s largest mall when the Miami project is complete. When that will be isn’t certain, because the project still needs more than 30 federal, state and local permits.
Developers say the project will create more than 14,000 permanent jobs and draw more than 30 million visitors a year.
