Canopy Growth’s Linton to Keynote NY CWCBE Cannabis Conference

Canopy Growth founder and CEO Bruce Linton will give the May 31 keynote speech at the Cannabis World Congress & Business Expo in New York

Linton heads Canada’s largest legal marijuana producer, which supplies more than a third of the medical marijuana customers in the country. Canada plans to legalize non-medical adult use of marijuana this summer, a market in which Canopy Growth plans to be a major force.

Linton has said he also has aspirations for major growth outside of Canada as other countries loosen laws on cannabis as well, though he said recently that there are currently no plans to do business in the United States, because the plant is illegal under U.S. federal law. It currently operates in seven countries on four continents.

Canopy Growth was the first cannabis company to be federally regulated in Canada and the first publicly-traded marijuana company in North America.

The company, which has a market capitalization of more than $6 billion CDN, owns what is likely Canada’s best-known name in marijuana, the Tweed brand. Last fall, it announced it was doubling its production capability with new greenhouse space ahead of the legalization of non-medical marijuana in Canada.

Canopy Growth also made big news in Canada last year when the big alcoholic beverage company Constellation Brands bought a minority stake in the company. Constellation owns brands including Corona Beer, Robert Mondavi wines and Svedka vodka.

Linton will deliver the Keynote address on the morning of Thurs. May 31 at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. The business-to-business trade show and conference is held three times a year, once in New York, once in Los Angeles and once in Boston. The New York conference is May 30-June 2.

The other Keynote speech at the New York conference will be delivered by television personality Montel Williams, who also is an advocate for broader use of medical cannabis. Williams founded a medical marijuana company in 2016 called LenitivLabs.
